Tramin Unterebner

Unterebner Pinot Grigio Alto Adige DOC bottle image

Wine Description

100% Pinot Grigio from the Unterebner plot, this is not your average Pinot Grigio. The grapes for this wine are rigorously selected. 40% of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and 60% is refined in large oak casks. Unterebner is incredibly rich, refined, and elegant. This wine shows opulence, yet is balanced by the minerality that always comes from this plot.  Age worthy, indeed.

Acclaim
“Vivid dark golden yellow. Knockout nose of ultra ripe peach, pear nectar, cinnamon apple pie, honey and tropical fruit. This seems like it was hit by noble rot, but Winemaker Willi Sturz told me there really wasn’t any that year, although he adds that a portion of the grapes might have air-dried slightly on the vine. Smooth, rich and dense, with a strong mineral undertone to the pure, lively stone and tropical fruit flavors. Finishes extremely long, multilayered and very smooth, with noteworthy complexity and freshness. This drop-dead gorgeous Pinot Grigio manages the neat trick of being both extremely concentrated and perfumed while staying light on its feet. The 2008 clocks in at only 13.5% alcohol and this may account in part for its refined, racy mouthfeel.”
— Ian D’Agata, Mar 2017
If you like aromatic expression of Pinot Grigio, look for a wine from the Alto Adige appellation like this wine from Tramin. Cool-climate winemaking tends to add layers of peach and almond blossom beyond characteristic aromas of apple and pear. The mouthfeel here is creamy and rich.
