Poggio ai Merli Merlot Toscana IGT bottle image

Wine Description

Made from 100% Merlot harvested from a single vineyard located 1,181 feet above sea level in the heart of Chianti Classico. The grapes are harvested in September, then crushed, de-stemmed and macerated in contact with the skins for 28 days. The wine is aged in barrique for 15 months, followed by an additional 10 months in bottle.

Acclaim
The 2002 Poggio ai Merli, a Merlot, is unexpectedly positive - the vines are still young and the stressful trio of hot vintages from 1999 and 2001 gave rather hot and alcoholic wines. The cooler weather of 2002, instead, gave a surprisingly dark wine, round and ripe and with attractive notes of plums and charred oak in a medium-bodied, supple format.
