Prager Wachstum Bodenstein Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner Wachstum Bodenstein Smaragd bottle image

Wine Description

Wachtum means “Growth” or “Cru”. These young vines represent a nursery of sorts. Starting in 2000, Toni has assiduously collected and planted here over 100 different clones of Grüner Veltliner and with 2007 released the first wine from this site. The idea is to demonstrate a vibrant expression of the variety and also to protect and preserve the biodiversity of the grape variety. To further enhance the singular character of this wine the vineyard is planted to reclaimed terraces that had overgrown with forest due to decades of neglect, located at the very top of the Achleiten hillside.

Acclaim
“From a uniquely-diverse, post-trained 2002 planting in the unusually low soil pH middle reaches and eastern side of the Achleiten (and for more about which see my report in issue 181), the 2010 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Wachstum Toni Bodenstein projects as dramatically different a gustatory personality from its fellow ‘regular’ Achleiten Grüner Veltliner in this collection as its differences in soil, location, vine material and training would suggest. Red peach, strawberry, and rhubarb supply a striking sense of fruit compote backed by a sense of sweetness seemingly from sheer extract. Pepper and herb inflections add counterpoint and subtle salinity saliva inducement, …lusciously fruit-forward bottling, one I suspect will be best enjoyed over the next 8-10 years.”
— Wine Advocate, Oct 2011
“Toni Bodenstein's 2010 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Wachstum Bodenstein is intense and concentrated on the lemony-scented nose that displays intensity but also rather thrifty ripeness that delivers a lot of stone and green leaves to the nose but no generosity. On the palate, this is a sweetish and thrifty Veltliner with an austere finish that might improve with bottle age, but it has more features of the 2014 (with much more intensity and concentration) than with any another vintage. The 2010 was macerated for 12 hours due to very high acidity in the must. Tasted in Weissenkirchen/Wachau in September 2019.”
