Wine Description

Franz Prager, co-founder of the Vinea Wachau, had already earned a reputation for his wines when Toni Bodenstein married into the family. Bodenstein’s passion for biodiversity and old terraces, coupled with brilliant winemaking, places Prager in the highest echelon of Austrian producers.

Smaragd is a designation of ripeness for dry wines used exclusively by members of the Vinea Wachau. The wines must have minimum alcohol of 12.5%. The grapes are hand-harvested, typically in October and November, and are sent directly to press where they spontaneously ferment in stainless-steel tanks.

Wachstum, meaning “Growth” or “Cru,” is a nursery for Toni Bodenstein who planted 110 different clones of Grüner Veltliner in an abandoned terrace at the top of Achleiten. When initially planted in 1997, the goal of Wachstum Bodenstein was to preserve biodiversity. It is now one of Prager’s most sought-after wines.

Acclaim
“This comes from a vineyard at the top of Achleiten, where proprietor Toni Bodenstein planted 110 different clones of grüner veltliner in 1997. In 2017, those vines created a gorgeous wine, crisp and floral in its herbal citrus fruit, and sultry in its crushed-stone minerality. It expands with air, turning toward notes of pear, peach and plum even as the acidity holds the wine tightly, an elegant veltliner that wears its power lightly.”

“From the upper part of the Achleiten and very close to the Stockkultur, Prager's intensely white-golden colored 2017 Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Wachstum Bodenstein is based on a blend of many different Veltliner clones and massal selections averaging roughly 30 years. The bouquet is very deep, intense and flinty on the complex and exciting nose, with crunchy stone and lemon aromas. Rich and intense on the palate, this is an enormously powerful, very dense and juicy, slightly creamy-textured but very elegant and almost sweet (high glycerin) Achleiten. It is a long-distance runner with salinity and good tannin grip and mineral tension that will show its true character only in years.”
