Castellare S. Niccolò

S. Niccolò Vin Santo del Chianti Classico DOC bottle image

Wine Description

Made from 60% Malvasia and 40% Trebbiano, the grapes used in the wine are harvested from various estate vineyards in Castellina. After harvest, the grapes are dried and fermentation is carried out slowly in small barrels known as caratelli. The wine is then aged in these barrels for an additional five years.

Acclaim
“Readers who like traditional Vin Santo will adore Castellare's 2007 San Niccolo. Almonds, orange peel, cinnamon, mint and leather all meld together in a relatively mid-weight, dry Vin Santo loaded with personality. The 2007 possesses gorgeous inner perfume and texture, yet remains light on its feet and totally classy. When I think of great traditional Vin Santos, Castellare is among the very best.”
— Antonio Galloni, Aug 2013
“The 2007 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico San Niccolo is aged for five years in traditional caratelli, or small barrel. This 60-40 blend of Malvasia Bianca and Trebbiano bursts open with a dark golden color and strong aromas of forest floor and dried porcino mushroom. Background tones include caramel, maple syrup, honey and toasted walnut. It glides smoothly over the palate with a bright spot of refreshing acidity.”
— Monica Larner, Aug 2013
