Castellare Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico DOCG bottle image

Wine Description

Located in the Chianti Classico commune of Castellina, this Castellare offering is comprised primarily of the local Sangiovese grape, Sangioveto.  Research begun in the late 1970s allowed Castellare to isolate this clone and enabled the winery to make this very unique style of a Tuscan classic.

Acclaim
“Lots of candied apples, watermelon and blackberry pastille make for an appealing if slightly jammy nose. Full-bodied and fruity, but a little kitschy on the finish.”
— James Suckling, Nov 2019
“Owner Paolo Panerai founded Castellare di Castellina in 1977 by combining four separate estates in the town of Castellina in the Chianti Classico region. Panerai is still involved today, along with winemaker and managing director Alessandro Cellai; together they oversee the 81-acre vineyard. The southwest-facing plot for this Sangiovese and Canaiolo blend lies at 1,450 feet of elevation. Grown in calcareous clay-loam soils, the vines were planted in the 1980s. Low yields are key for concentration. The wine ages 14 months in used French oak and an additional seven months in bottle. 10,000 cases made.” (#17)
