Wine Description

Quinta da Viçosa is one of João Portugal Ramos' biggest vineyards, with a total of 100 acres located near Estremoz. In this vineyard different grape varieties have been planted every year, with the winery choosing to plant one Portuguese variety and one foreign variety to produce this wine, which is always new and appealing to the consumer. In this wine, the vintner has chosen to blend the international Syrah with the indigenous Trincadeira. Part of the harvest is foot trodden in marble troughs, known as lagares, and the remainder is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 12 months in new French and oak half barrels.

Acclaim
"The 2017 Quinta da Viçosa A-S - the blends and initials change - is an equal blend of Aragonez and Syrah aged for 12 months in new and mostly American oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This was only in bottle a month when seen, but it seemed like a potential star. Oaky up front, this is more notable for its power, concentration and finesse. Deep and intense, this very young blend is hard to fully appreciate because it is so tight, so closed and a bit hard-edged. Yet it has great fruit, sensual texture and the ability to age. This is special, and it should become more so with time. The only thing missing is time- to pull in the wood and moderate the tannins. It may hit peak more around the mid-2020s. It will age very well, so there's no rush."

“One of four single-vineyard cuvées, this sumptuous, perfumed red from 40ha on clay/limestone under organic production is an equal-parts blend of the vintage’s best performing international and Portuguese grapes. Rioja-like kid glove lift, with velvety raspberry and blackberry fruit, pencil shaving and game nuances. Seamless milk chocolate tannins and acidity maintain direction and flow. Rich but persistent.”
