“Luminous red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, cinnamon, minerals, orange peel, flowers and aromatic herbs. Rich, dense and suave, with enticing inner-mouth perfume and ultra-smooth tannins nicely framing the ripe but precise red fruit and flinty flavors. Finishes very long and suave, boasting a complex, multilayered personalità. A knockout wine that looks, smells and tastes still unbelievably young. This is one of the greatest wines from southern Italy I have tasted in some time, but I have found over the years there is considerable bottle variation with this specific vintage of Rosso del Conte and not all bottles I have tried in the past were quite as exceptional as this one.”
Tasca d'Almerita's 1998 Rosso del Conte is a soft, mid-weight effort with good aromatic and flavor development in its dark fruit, spices, licorice and leather. A blast of tar informs the long finish. The 1998 is an excellent choice for drinking over the near-term.
