In “Italy’s Most Collectible Wines,” Kerin O’Keefe recommends “regions and vintages you should be buying, cellaring and drinking, now and for years to come.” Included among Kerin’s picks for top vintage Barbaresco: GUISEPPE CORTESE Barbaresco Rabajà Riserva 2006."
“Demonstrating finesse and depth, it discloses a stunning fragrance of pressed rose, iris, berry, leather and truffle. The rich but elegant palate delivers creamy cherry, white pepper and licorice along with supple tannins. This wine already shows great depth but will continue to develop for years.”
“A clean, gentle style, this wine offers velvety tannins that hold Nebbiolo’s earthen charm. It’s graceful and delicious to drink now, a kind of honey of the earth, the tannins texturally uplifting in the finish.”
“This red is developing well, with flavors of mulled cherry and leather picking up spice and tea accents. Still firm and dense on the finish, but the overall impression is one of balance and fine length.”
“Palish red. Slightly high-toned aromas of raspberry, wild herbs and menthol, plus a pungent suggestion of pine needles. At once opulent and firm on entry, then rich and powerful in the middle, combining a sappy urgency of fruit with a deep creamy texture. Very complete Barbaresco, finishing with huge, broad, palate-dusting tannins and terrific persistence.”
“The 2006 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is deceptively medium in body. Dark, powerful and inward, the 2006 needs time in the glass to start gradually uncoiling from its presently shut down state. The finish is all silk, power and minerality, qualities that reflect its classical leanings to the maximum. Hints of dark cherries, wild flowers and exotic spices linger in the empty glass.”
The 2006 Barolo is an overachiever in this vintage. Dark cherries, plums, mint, spices, herbs and a host of other balsamic notes are woven together nicely in a wine of notable class. The wine gains richness and volume on the mid-palate, leading to a long, powerful close. This is another impressive effort from Prunotto.
