“Pale yellow-gold. Pear nectar, orange pith, succulent flowers and a hint of buttered toast on the pungent, mineral-accented nose. Fleshy and seamless on the palate, offering lush, smoke-laced orchard/citrus fruit flavors and a sweetening touch of honey that builds on the back half. Shows very good energy and spicy cut on the pliant finish, which hangs on with strong tenacity.”
“Bright golden yellow. Herbal and mineral nuances complement apple, pear and honey aromas and flavors. Rich, dense and smooth, with racy acidity leaving a mouth-watering quality behind and really extending the flavors on the long back end. The 2006 vintage in Termeno was better than in other parts of Alto Adige and was characterized by especially ripe grapes.”
Bright ruby-red. A bit narrower and less ripe on the nose than the 2005 version, offering scents of medicinal black fruits and mint. Then sweet, plush and chocolatey in the mouth; in a rather powerful style but showing considerable Malbec sex appeal and inner-mouth lift to its flavors of dark fruits, flowers and spices. Finishes with substantial ripe, suave tannins, an element of saline complexity and noteworthy Cabernet grip. According to winemaker Vigil, this wine was very tannic at the beginning. It's approachable today but still has plenty of positive evolution ahead.
Dark ruby-red. Fresh flowers and red cherry on the captivating nose. Then more floral red fruit in the mouth, with still chewy, slightly tough tannins providing backbone to the ripe fruit and spicy coffee flavors. Long, pure and vibrant on the finish, the 2006 was a generally cooler year than the 2004, 2005 and 2007 vintages, a fact showcased by this wine’s slightly more austere but refined personality.
“Aromas of cherry pit, blackcurrant, cured tobacco and mocha, with licorice and succulent herb nuances building in the glass. Sappy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and cocoa flavors and a touch of candied rose. Loosens up a bit and shows more sweetness on the finish, which features well-integrated tannins and lingering smoke and vanilla qualities.”
“Initially restrained though mature aromas of apricot pit, hyacinth and forest floor begin to unfold with aeration. Dense, concentrated and still youthful in the mouth, displaying magnificent structure and ethereal balance to the flavors of white peach, anise and lavender. The subtle finish shows superb persistence. While it is now at its apogee, this wine still has years of graceful evolution ahead of it.”
“The 2006 Acininobili is laced with white truffle, crème bruleé, burnt sugar, savory herbs, apricot jam and yellow stone fruits. The French oak is a bit obvious at this stage, which suggests the wine may not have the structure to stand up to its oak. Still, Acininobili has an exceptional track record for aging, so it will be interesting to see how things develop over the coming years.”
“The 2006 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Sergio Zenato wraps around the palate with layers of mocha, espresso, Morello cherries, spices, mint and new leather. It is a wonderfully plush, expressive wine loaded with aromatic and flavor complexity. There is plenty of inner perfume and sweetness, but what impresses most is the wine’s sense of structure and length. Darker notes flesh out on the finish adding a baritone register to the fruit that is highly appealing. This is a fabulous showing from Zenato.”
