Recommended - Italian wine pairs with summer grilling - While skimming my wine notes I noticed it had been some time since I reviewed an Italian wine, and with summer upon us, wines from this country are great for matching with rustic grilled foods. This Allegrini Valpolicella was a winner from the first sip. The nose had all the classic Italian characteristics, subtle fruit and inviting hints of earthiness. Flavors flowed like silk; dark cherry, black plums and hints of dusty cocoa powder kept resurfacing even after I swallowed. The finish showcased the fruit and had a slight tannin structure that balanced the acidity with the fruit. All the components of this wine called out for a good meal. We enjoyed it with grilled vegetables over a simple pasta dish tossed with olive oil and Parmesan cheese. The light, simple flavors of the pasta and the garlic and balsamic flavors of the vegetables allowed the wine's acidity to work perfectly. This medium-bodied wine also would go well with lamb or grilled chicken. I cannot think of a meal that this winner would not complement. Allegrini has been producing exceptional wines from Italy for as long as I can remember. This particular wine is from the Classico region of Valpolicella in Veneto. The concept of Classico and Reserva is that certain areas showcase the flavors of a region and select areas offer the best traits for the grape. For instance, in the Chianti region are certain areas called Chianti Classico that can produced better wines with more aging and stricter rules. And within the Classico are areas called Reserva that produce even higher quality wines.
