“Wild berry, licorice and plum aromas are solid but quiet. This Cabernet is built on leathery, tough tannins and roasted, savory flavors of saucy berry and plum. A spunky, savory tasting finish is tomatoey and leathery, with leftover sauciness.”
“The 2011 Catena Alta Cabernet Sauvignon is produced with grapes from different Mendoza zones. There are tons of cracked black pepper aromas along with notes of cured meat, meaty blackberries and a herbal hint. It is quite European-styled in its balanced austerity. The serious and balanced palate is medium-bodied with earthy tannins.”
"The 2011 Catena Alta Malbec is a blend of wines produced with Malbec grapes from different zones within Mendoza from their signature vineyards Angelica (Lunlunta), La Piramide (Agrelo), Nicasia (Altamira) and Adrianna (Gualtallary). It has a showy, ripe nose full of flowers and blueberries, very classic Malbec with nicely integrated oak aromas of spices. The palate is dry with fine, sweet tannins and some balsamic notes ending very fresh. Comparatively, I was more impressed with the 2011, but set side by side with the vintages of yesteryear this is a superb, austere Malbec."
“Shows blacker fruits on the nose than the 2012 Cabernet, along with complicating notes of bitter chocolate, spices and dried flowers. Then broad, dense and light on its feet, with flavors of plum, redcurrant, mocha, minerals and dried flowers given additional depth by a saline element. This firmly structured wine finishes with dusty, horizontal tannins that call for a few years of patience.”
“In 2011, more than 70 percent of Catena’s Alta Malbec comes from vineyards in Gualtallary and Altamira, in the high elevations of the Uco Valley. This vintage is particularly bright and youthful, the firm red fruit flavors seemingly lit from within. The tannins have a rather untamed grip; if you open the wine now, do it next to the grill.”
“Meaty, minty scents accent core cassis, jammy blackberry and oaky aromas. In the mouth, this benchmark Argentinian Malbec is tight and structured, with no flab or excess weight. An exotic mix of blueberry, cassis and Middle East spices finish long, with oak-driven lemony snap.”
“Saturated deep ruby. Superripe aromas of blackberry and minerals. Wonderfully rich and deep, showing terrific verve to its dark berry and chocolate flavors. A step up in sweetness and sappiness from the regular Catena Malbec. Finishes chewy, broad and very long, with serious but fine tannins, a lingering note of licorice and great verve.”
