“The 2010 Guru is the winery’s old-vines (50 years) Branco, a blend of Viosinho, Rabigato, Codega do Larinho and Gouveio aged in oak for six months. This is a library wine, last seen about nine years back. Over the years, it has been proven to me that they can age – thus requiring some adjustment in drinking windows – but early examples still need to prove their case. (I’d rather have people happily surprised than badly disappointed.) This has done beautifully. In prime time, it shows some complexity now but no decay. It still has fine concentration and a lingering, lovely finish. It feels full-bodied in the mouth. If anything, it is notably better today than when it was young. It has plenty of life left too. Let’s continue to take that in stages, but this shows no sign that there is any urgency in drinking it. That said, it is showing awfully well right now. If you have a few, pop a cork today. Save some for later.”
"If it does not quite have the focus and depth of the big boys, sometimes it seems not so far behind and it is 1/4th the price. Despite 18 months in used oak, it seems pure and fresh, a wine that is expressive and flavored by its fruit, not its oak. It does not have the depth of its old vines sibling, but it improves rather than fades in the glass and it has more substance than seemed apparent at first. The fifth taste was more interesting than the first. As graceful as it seemed on opening, it added a layer of depth and power, demonstrating that it has a fine backbone and a crisp, sunny edge. This is completely charming."
"As graceful as it is and as much finesse as it shows, it was nice to see it expand in the glass and show some intensity on the finish as well. This property will never produce obvious 'wow' wines. They will be highly regarded, rather, for their balance and harmony, their subtlety and precision. Hopefully, that list of adjectives will include complexity with age, something I am rather counting on."
“The 2010 GURU is the winery’s old vines (50 years) Branco, a blend of Viosinho, Rabigato, Codega do Larinho and Gouveio aged in oak for 6 months. Beautifully constructed this year, it combines a gentle, welcoming demeanor, with all of its parts well integrated and subtle oak showing. There is a bit of bite on the finish, but it is remarkably graceful, seeming both delicious and classy, with a little subtlety. There were 5,500 bottles produced, along with some large format bottles. Drink now-2015.”
