“The 2011 Syrah Migliara is every bit as compelling as it was from barrel. Deep, unctuous and also quite aromatic, the 2011 exudes class. Inky blue and purplish-hued stone fruits, spice, new leather, lavender and black pepper all meld together. The 2011 appears to be going through a stubborn period, as it is a bit less overt and expressive than it was from barrel. Tasted next to the 2012, the 2011 presents a darker profile.”
“The 2011 Syrah Migliara shows a more savory side of Syrah, with the fruit pushed a bit backward and plenty of varietal aromas and flavors that develop in the glass. Lavender, cured meats, black pepper, mint, sweet spices and tobacco give the 2011 superb complexity that plays off the inherent richness of the vintage and generosity of Cortona. A dense, meaty wine, the 2011 Migliara is going to need at least a few years in bottle to fully blossom. Still, it is impressive today. I tasted the 2011 from tank, just prior to bottling.”
“A gorgeous, voluptuous wine, the 2011 Syrah Il Bosco possesses striking density and pure power, yet delivers that intensity with no hard edges and tons of pure sophistication. Today, the Bosco is utterly exquisite, but it will be even better in another few years, once the aromatics develop a bit more.”
“Cortona, Tuscany is one of the most promising corners in Italy for the production of Syrah-based wines. The 2011 Syrah Borgo delivers excellent varietal character with dark fruit nuances, spice, black pepper, leather, cured meat and bacon fat. The presentation is steady and forthcoming, without ever feeling too intense or heavy. In fact, the balance is just right. This producer shows a deft hand with this vigorous variety and has produced an extremely food-friendly and pleasurable red wine.”
“Fabulous syrah with depth and structure. Beautiful aromas of pure dark fruit, smoked meat and hints of walnuts. Full body, rich fruit and tannins. A powerful red. Needs two or three years to soften. Always thoroughly outstanding.”
"Fresh blackberry and strawberry fruit, with a dark, dense heart, overlaid with dried violets, aromatic herbs, and coffee notes. The palate has chewy blackberry and raspberry, with char-grilled meats, some tobacco, espresso, and a little sweet vanilla. The balance is excellent with plenty of acidity to carry the density, and tannins that add a delicate grip. The finish is solid, with lingering tobacco notes to complete the experience. Alluring and satisfying."
Best Buy: “Lifted aromas of violets give way to ripe blackberries edged with anise, cool and firmly tannic. Hints of grilled meat and black pepper on the finish suggest a match with grilled lamb chops.”
