The 2005 Aquabona, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Petit Verdot, spent 18 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. It is a richly-textured wine endowed with sweet dark fruit, herbs, spices, earthiness and game. The oak is mostly felt in the volume of the wine and the slightly drying tannins on the finish. Still, this is a strong first effort from Fabio Tassi. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015.
This bold, spicy wine will appeal to those who love modern reds with thick concentration and lingering oak-driven flavors. Black cherry, prune and ripe blueberry do come into view, but the protagonist here is the oak. The wine has chewy tannins, good length on the finish would pair with grilled meats or aged cheeses.
