“A very opulent wine that verges on too much, but there’s some good aniseed, licorice and herb character to support the more overt notes of black-cherry compote and pure vanilla essence. Full-bodied with a ton of dark fruit, but some good firmness and drive to the backbone of acidity. A blend of 50 per cent cabernet sauvignon and 50 per cent merlot. Drink in 2023, when this will have calmed down a bit.”
“This shows the warmth of the vintage, while remaining fresh and in tune for this grape. Brambleberry pie, cherry compote and lots of violet essence. Shows some good structure and depth on the palate to bolster the tangy acidity and floral undertones.”
“Made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, this boasts aromas of violet, black-skinned berry and underbrush. The savory, supple palate offers tobacco, dried black cherry and white pepper alongside polished tannins.”

La Pineta Pinot Nero Toscana IGT
“The winemaker Alessandro Cellai winery in Castellina in Chianti, in the wine-producing heart of Tuscany, 3 hectares of vineyards, half of which destined for Pinot Nero and the remaining ones in Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, was created with the sole objective of producing , a great wine from Pinot Noir, a vine considered among the best in the world, capable of giving wines of great elegant elegance, but not always understood by everyone: the opposite, in short, of the wine pleaser. The pinewood is a ruby red wine that smells like fresh berries, spices and undergrowth. It is a balanced, intense wine with a persistent finish, ideal to accompany foie gras and red meat dishes.”
“Attractive perfumes of flower petal and black currant. Hints of sandalwood. Medium to full body, ripe and sweet fruit with plenty of vanilla and wood character. Needs a little more bottle time to come together but some may like its vibrant youth. Drink or hold.”
Podere Monastero's 2014 La Pineta is an attractive, juicy Pinot Noir to drink now and over the next few years. Naturally, the 2014 doesn't have the overtness or juiciness of the best vintages, but it is nicely judged all the same. Crushed flowers, raspberries, menthol and sweet spices grace the open-knit finish.
