The 2005 Chianti Classico (80% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot) offers up attractive sweet roses, spices and dark fruit. The Merlot gives the wine a lovely plumpness in this vintage. This fresh, floral Chianti is best enjoyed over the next few years, while the fruit is vibrant.
It is certainly a darker, richer wine, but not necessarily more complex. Here the style favors an overt expression of dark cherries, plums, spices and toasted oak, all of which come together with notable intensity.
The 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva possesses a more intense profile of dark cherries, plums, smokiness, toasted oak and spices. There is good complexity and length here.... Anticipated maturity: 2009-2014.
