The 2004 Montsalvat is 100% Carinena sourced from 80-100-year-old vines and aged for 18 month in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it proffers a brooding aromatic array of scorched earth, mineral, leather, lavender, plum, and blackberry. Opulent on the palate with a Reubenesque personality, the wine is dense, powerful, and succulent.
The 2004 Montgarnatx is a blend of 75% Garnacha and 25% Carignan from relatively young vines planted in a challenging terroir yielding less than a ton of fruit per acre. The wine was fermented in stainless steel and aged for 8 months in used French oak. Dark ruby/purple in color, the wine gives off lovely aromas of cedar, cinnamon, kirsch, blueberry, and licorice. This is followed by a full-bodied wine with ripe, plummy, balsamic and blue fruit flavors of superb intensity, lots of depth, and a long, pure finish.
