“The Superiore category is a relatively new addition to the Vulture wine appellation, and I’ve only seen a handful of these wines so far. One of these is from Bisceglia. The 2015 Aglianico del Vulture Superiore Gudarrà is stacked tall and wide with ripe aromas of blackberry preserves, plum and sweet prune. That hot-vintage ripeness is evident, but thankfully, it stops just short of going overboard. You taste some of that sunny summer sweetness, but there are enough mineral notes and overall freshness to keep the wine in good focus and balance.”
“As far as value goes, this one is unbeatable, showing a level of complexity that’s unusual at this price, making it a top choice for everyday drinking and beyond.
The wine is notable for its earthiness, including aromas of mushroom and forest floor, and its spicy, dark-berry fruit. There’s an intriguing black licorice note on the finish. This is a pure expression of the fruit, as aging takes place in stainless steel vats with no exposure to oak. It was a perfect match for a tomato-and-meat sauce over pasta.”
“You get terrific value with this red wine from Southern Italy. The fruit in this warm vintage comes together with precision and balanced intensity. The 2015 Aglianico del Vulture Gudarrà is a generous and opulent expression with a thick layer of black fruit. In addition, you get delicate and territorial notes of campfire ash and exotic spice. This is a contemporary expression from a deeply traditional wine region. On the finish, you get touches of black olive and grilled herb.”
