San Giorgio

Brand Description

The winery was founded in 1982 and purchased by the Tipa Bertarelli Family in 2016.  It covers 360 acres with the recent addition of a new cellar and 62 acres under vine with 10-20+ year old vines.  Production yields are maintained extremely low to ensure the highest quality wines at just 4-5 tons per hectare.  All vineyard management and production is carried out by hand and adheres to principles that respect nature and the land.

Location of Vineyard

Located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate at the top of a ridge at 1,300 feet above sea level, San Giorgio is uniquely positioned in the southeastern part of Montalcino.  The soil is rich with fossils and there is also a major presence of clay with big portion of tufaceus outcrops. The climate is mild and Mediterranean with nearly constant winds.

Winemaking Philosophy

A viticulture totally based on respectful methods and principles toward the environment allows a spontaneous productive balance with very low yield per hectare, completely harvested by hand and carefully selected.

“There is deep black fruit and black plum on the San Giorgio 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte although it takes a little patience to get there. The wine is restrained or closed initially, and it’s hard ti draw anything out for the first 15 minutes or so after the bottle is opened. Once it gets going, you are treated to sweet cherry, redwood, almond biscotti and dried rose potpourri.” — acclaim for 2019 San Giorgio Ugolforte Brunello di Montalcino from Wine Advocate, Dec 2023
“A sweet nose of vanilla, toasted coconut and candied cherry is balanced by undertones of wild herbs. On the palate, that sweetness evolves with figs and chocolate, while crushed stones and soil amplify the savory. Notable tannins are almost chewy with density and structure.”
— acclaim for 2018 San Giorgio Ugolforte Brunello di Montalcino from Wine Enthusiast, Nov 2023
“The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Ugolforte is understated in the glass, lifted and delicate, with white pepper, pretty rose and nuances of dried strawberry. This envelopes the palate with soft textures and soothingly ripe red fruits contrasted with savory spices and inner herbal tones. The 2018 lingers long, showing balsamic nuances and salted licorice, as gentle tannins frame but don’t slow its momentum. It will be interesting to follow this understated beauty through its maturity.”
