Prager Achleiten Riesling

Prager Achleiten Riesling

Wine Description

Franz Prager, co-founder of the Vinea Wachau, had already earned a reputation for his wines when Toni Bodenstein married into the family. Bodenstein’s passion for biodiversity and old terraces, coupled with brilliant winemaking, puts Prager in the highest echelon of Austrian producers.

Achleiten is one of Austria's greatest vineyards and is known for producing wines with a distinctive mineral character. Achleiten sits near the town of Weissenkirchen with steep terraces that face the Danube between 200 and 400 meters of elevation. The vineyard has very little top soil with various Gneiss in its parent rock. The name Achleiten comes from the Latin "Ach" (aqua) and "Leiten" meaning a conduct for water. Wines from Achleiten have a signature aroma and flavor of flint, smoke and minerals.

Acclaim
“Aged 20 years now, the 1997 Ried Achleiten Riesling Smaragd shows a golden-yellow color and opens with an intense and nicely aged bouquet of mature Riesling, with concentrated apricot and lovely floral aromas. Full-bodied, pure and fresh, with vibrating minerals and a firm tannin grip, this is an intense and concentrated dry Achleiten Riesling with a long, pure, salty, aromatically complex and slightly minty finish. The well-structured finish shows some delicate bitter notes that might come from the aging under natural cork, which adds some tannins and makes this a perfect Riesling with food. It is powerful but with no hints of either sweetness or creaminess.”
