Poggio di Sotto

Brand Description

Established in 1989, Poggio di Sotto is known in Montalcino for its unique ecological niche of old Sangiovese vineyards (more than 50 years old). Together with the University of Florence 120 unique biotypes of Sangiovese were discovered. This biodiversity is the cornerstone of the unique brightness and complexity that is found in Poggio di Sotto wines and the leader of its distinctive style.  Since its foundation, the estate has become famous for the high quality of the Sangiovese that it cultivates and has quickly achieved cult status.

Location of Vineyard

Poggio di Sotto is located on a hill to the southeast of Montalcino. Located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate at the foot of Monte Amiata, the steep vineyards on the south-facing slopes are at altitudes of between 650 and 1,300 feet abovce sea level. The stony soils are composed of gravel and clay in the lower sections, as well as sandy loam in the higher areas.

Winemaking Philosophy

Integrity, quality and teamwork are the values that are upheld by the Tipa Bertarelli Family.  They apply Italian passion and Swiss precision in crafting wines that represent top quality, history and identity of the region.  The winery practices sustainable and natural methods in full respect of Nature.  Their final pillar and belief is to protect and maintain the identity of Tuscany and its traditions.  While innovating in the vineyard and cellar, their wines always reflect the tradition of the region.

“The Poggio di Sotto 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva was reticent when I tasted it, probably owing to a period of awkwardness for such a young sample. The immediate suggestion is to give this bottle more time because, tasted now, It was definitely poured before its prime. The bouquet starts off with austere aromas of oil painting or waxed antiques, but those blow off. After that, you get an exciting compilation of redcurrant, cherry skin, rose petal and floral potpourri. This wine is very sprightly on the palate with fresh berry crush, integrated acidity and fine, chalky tannins.” — acclaim for 2018 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva from Wine Advocate, Dec 2023
“Although this wine was very shy initially, the Poggio di Sotto 2019 Brunello di Montalcino eventually hits all the high notes of Sangiovese. This is a wine of enormous inner tension, showing a punchy, lifted personality with aromas of cherry skin and blackberry/ You get brandied cherry, strawberry glazed pie with the gelatin, underbrush, blue flower, forget-me-nots, balsam herb, mint and licorice. A few hours later, the wine had developed into a classic beauty with slender lines, firm structure and a sparkle of brilliant acidity. The oak is integrated to the point of invisibility, the tannins are elegant and fine and the acidity is that proverbial cherry on top. Ultimately, I liked this village bottling more than the 2018 Riserva.” — acclaim for 2019 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino from Wine Advocate, Dec 2023
“The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is youthfully restrained, forcing the taster to work for its aromatic blend of crushed ashen stones, wild herbs and smoke. This slowly evolves with further time in the glass, blowing off its earthy persona to reveal a core of red currants and dusty rose.It washes across the palate with silken textures, soft and pillowy, with depths of dark red fruit and mineral tones guided by vibrant acidity. This leaves a coating of fine tannins lingering, closing down hard through the finish with orange and clove hints. The 2020 needs cellaring to show its best, as it holds its power in reserve today.” — acclaim for 2020 Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino from Vinous, Dec 2023
