Pikes Traditionale Riesling

Traditionale Riesling bottle image

Wine Description

The Riesling vines that produce Pikes Dry Riesling Traditionale enjoy east to southeast exposure and for the most part are ungrafted with just a small percentage planted on rootstock. The soils are red brown earth over clay, with slate and broken bluestone sub-soil.  It is this slate and bluestone sub-soil as well as the cooler climate of Polish Hill that contributes to Riesling’s intense mineral character and complexity.

Acclaim
“In 1984, the Pike family purchased 27ha of prime viticultural land in the heart of the Polish Hill River sub-region. Traditionale 2021 is the 37th vintage of this wine, sourced from the estate vineyards and other growers in Watervale, Leasingham, Mintaro and Sevenhill. It is made exclusively with free run juice, to capture the character of each site. Justin Knock MW: Bright, citrussy and precise, a controlled style. Tight and firm on the palate, the acidity is a little more malic and tense than in The Merle. Lime juice clarity. Roger Jones: Restrained aromatics and acidity, mellow buttercups, gently honeyed then opens up with a flinty wet-stone effect and peeled stone fruit. A wine to savour now, but will also excel with age. Love the purity and precision. Julia Sewell: Vibrant, bursting with lemon peel, lime blossom, green apple skins. Essential Clare Valley: steely, focused, pure in citrus fruit concentration, saline but with weight to fill the finish and balance the freshness. Moreish.”
— Decanter, May 2022
"Pure joy here! Lime zest, lemon pith, citrus blossom, brine, green apple skins and plenty of plush - almost ripe - stone fruit on the palate. This is generous and attractive, the acidity providing the tension and structure the it needs to elevate it into deliciousness. And delicious it is.”— (Silver)
