Castellare I Sodi di S. Niccolò

I Sodi di San Niccolò Toscana IGT bottle image

Wine Description

I Sodi di San Niccolò was created in the early 1980s to demonstrate that native grapes could produce a wine with all the power and grace of a Super Tuscan.  The name "I Sodi" refers to land that is difficult to till (the grapes must be hand-harvested), and "San Niccolò" is an abandoned church on the Castellare property.  This wine captures both the rich history of the vineyard as well as the Sangioveto grape's enormous potential.

Acclaim
“This is a landmark wine for Italy and for Castallare di Castellina. The 2011 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is made from mostly Sangioveto (Sangiovese) and a smaller part Malvasia Nera. Fruit is sourced from a historic vineyard that is characterized by a large presence of stones. This is a profound and elegant wine that is still very young in terms of its fruit profile and its tannins. It will require many more years to start its evolution. What it shows now is potential -- lots of potential. Dark fruit nuances are mixed with delicate accents of spice, balsam herb and cola. Give this wine a few more years before opening it.”
— Wine Advocate, Oct 2015
“The 2011 I Sodi di San Niccolò offers tremendous depth, power and intensity. The richness of the vintage comes through loud and clear in the wine's sweet fruit and glycerin, but then the firm tannins and Malvasia Nera kick in to give the wine its sense of proportion, while a host of savory and floral notes accompany the opulent finish. Deep, dark and dense on the palate, the 2011 should not be opened before age ten. I imagine the 2011 will always remain opulent, but is a real stunner. Ideally, readers should give the 2011 a few years to allow some of the baby fat to melt away.”
