Zenato Alanera Rosso Veronese

Alanera Rosso Veronese IGT bottle image

Wine Description

Alanera translates as "black wing," a reference to the raven, "corvo" in Italian, and an homage to the Valpolicella region's treasured indigenous grape, "Corvina".  Alanera is a seductive wine that derives extra richness from an innovative variation on the traditional appassimento method practiced throughout the zone.  50% of all the grapes harvested to produce this wine are partially dried for 45-60 days.  The classic Valpolicella varietals are dried in the main drying facility in Sant' Ambrogio where the Zenato family dry their Amarone grapes, while the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are dried at Zenato's Santa Cristina winery. The highly concentrated juice from these partially dried grapes adds an unusually complex spectrum of aromas and flavors to the blend.  12 months in barrel round out the tannin structure in this eminently drinkable red.

Acclaim
“I was certainly smitten like a kitten with this lovely rendition of Rosso Veronese from Zenato called Alanera made primarily from the Corvina grape…There was an immediate flavor connection in the terroir that took me back to my early days of cooking in Italian kitchens. The vine age (planted in 1970) adds to the complexity and with some of the grapes partially dried, that complexity and concentration expands considerably.
Aromas are dried red fruits with tobacco and coffee in the mix. Flavors are ripe plum, sour cherry and almond. 12 months of barrel aging smooths out the rough edges delivering velvety tannins that are mellow. The lengthy well balanced finish showcases the balanced bright acidity that reflects this wines propensity to pair well with beef in tomato sauce.”

“The 2012 Alanera is a new addition to the Zenato portfolio and pays tribute to the family patron who developed the estate's vineyards. The label depicts three swallows that are symbols of the three main hills that dominate this corner of Valpolicella. This IGT blend is composed of 55% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 10% Corvinone and 10% other grapes that are aged in part in oak, and in part in stainless steel. The bouquet shows good intensity with bright layers of spice, dark fruit and prune.”
