Stadt Krems Ried Grillenparz Riesling

Stadt Krems Ried Grillenparz Riesling

Wine Description

Weingut Stadt Krems was founded in 1452 as a source of revenue for the hospital of Krems and is one of the oldest wineries in Austria. The municipality of Krems still owns the 560-year old winery and is today one of the best in the region. Farming practices are ‘Certified Sustainable,’ and the estate belongs to the prestigious Traditionsweingüter.

Kremstal is a transitional region between the loess soils of Kamptal and the stone terraces of Wachau and the character of its wines depends greatly on vineyard location. The vineyards of Weingut Stadt Krems are within the city limits of Krems and its neighboring district of Stein where steep terraces face the Danube on primary rock-based soils.

Riesling Ried Grillenparz is a single-vineyard in Stein and classified as Erste Lage (premier cru) by the Traditionsweingüter. Grillenparz lies near the Wachau border and is a south-facing terraced hill with layers of gneiss, mica-schist, and calcareous conglomerates. Grillenparz translates as “cricket plot” and owes its name to the heat retaining soil that makes this both an attractive habitat for crickets and an ideal site for Riesling.

Acclaim
“The (Krems) Steiner 2021 Ried Grillenparz 1ÖTW Riesling attracts with a clear, bright, finely aromatic and elegant white stone fruit aroma on the nose. It is quite creamy and elegant on the palate, with rather soft acidity that only appears in the spicy-salty, mineral-tinged finish and provides proper animation. This is a great, already stimulating Riesling with substance and class. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.”
— Wine Advocate, Dec 2022
“What a beautiful nose of white peach, honeysuckle and jasmine this super-elegant dry riesling has. It’s so bright and invigorating. Very long and precise finish that’s as straight and bright as a laser beam.”
— James Suckling, Nov 2022
