Ségla Margaux

Margaux bottle image

Wine Description

About half of the 52 hectares of vineyard are around the château, but there are additional parcels near Margaux and Brane-Cantenac. The plantings are comprised of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc with an average vine age of 30 years and a yield of 32 hl/ha. Soils at Rauzan-Ségla are composed of deep, fine gravel which makes for natural irrigation

After hand harvesting and a double sorting, the fruit is gently crushed and then delivered to stainless tanks by gravity-flow where the fermentation begins. Alcoholic fermentation in lasted eight days with pump overs two or three times a day. Malolactic fermentation mostly occurred in vat, but a few wines were done in barrel. The wine was aged in 20% new French oak barrels.

Acclaim
“The 2015 Ségla has a deep garnet core, lucid in the glass. The nose is quite backward for a deuxième vin but gradually opens to reveal lovely blackberry and blueberry scents, just a hint of violet (there is no longer that flint-like scent I remarked upon out of barrel). The palate is medium-bodied with a plush and generous entry, very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, a vein of white pepper emerging during the second half that leaves a spicy residue after the wine has departed. On a budget? Looking for a second wine? Look no further.”

“The 2015 Segla is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and a "seasoning" of 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, representing just over half the total crop, matured in 25% new wood. It has a fragrant, very precise bouquet with mineral-rich, very pure blackberry, blueberry and cold flint-like aromas. There is wonderful tension here for a deuxième vin. The palate is medium-bodied with a juicy opening, just a tingle of spice on the tip of the tongue. There is very fine tension here, moderate weight but great persistence and sense of energy on the finish. On a budget? Thinking of a second wine? Look no further.”
