Rudi Pichler Riesling Ried Hochrain Smaragd

Wine Description

The Pichler family has been making wine in the village of Wösendorf since at least the late 19th century. The original cellar building, more of a small stall than a winery, was purchased in 1884 and their first vineyards were planted in the town of Wosendorf in 1904. The modern winery was built in 2004 near Rudi´s private home. After some initial wanderlust and the pursuit of various other interests – academic and commercial – Rudolf Pichler IV returned to the family winery with a seed of an idea. He had no formal training other than his memories of his grandfather and his instincts for great wine.

Acclaim
“The 2014 Riesling Smaragd Wösendorfer Hochrain displays a clear and intense, very deep and mineral-scented bouquet with ripe and well-concentrated, yellow-fleshed fruit aromas. Firm, piquant and salty, this is a rich but also very pure and mineral Riesling, with a lot of tension and lemon freshness. Very firm in its structure, super pure and lean, but dense and very long. This is great Riesling with great purity and tension.”
— Wine Advocate, Apr 2016
“Apple, muskmelon, gooseberry and green tomato combine for a slightly bifurcated but undeniably bright performance. High extract and prominent primary juiciness keep the tart and green elements from becoming austere or sour, and welcome salivation wells up on the sustained finish. Here is another Rudi Pichler 2014 that will deserve reassessment within 18 months, and may well reveal aging potential greater than my initial intuitions have led me to project.”
