Rudi Pichler Grüner Veltliner Ried Hochrain Smaragd

Wine Description

Smaragd is the Wachau designation for dry late harvest wines, above 12.5% alcohol through natural fermentation.  Vines up to 50 years old, growing in weathered primitive rock and loess soils, yield a profound, archetypal Veltliner that is rich in extracts.

Acclaim
“Golden yellow. Lovely herbal aromas of honeydew melon, brioche and cinnamon slowly unfold on the still youthful nose. Unctuous and deep, with spicy flavors of yellow plum and woodsmoke, the 2001 Hochrain has aged gracefully. While it's now supple and gently sweet on the palate, nuances of white pepper and tarragon still provide lift. Often the most elegant of the Pichler’s sites, Hochrain lives up to its reputation here, finishing long, warm and nicely balanced.”
