Pewsey Vale Vineyard

Brand Description

The Pewsey Vale Vineyard was established at Eden Valley in 1847 producing some of Australia’s first cool climate wines. The early Pewsey Vale Vineyard Rieslings were exported to England where they won numerous awards in the prestigious wine shows of the era. Today Pewsey Vale Vineyard is a highly esteemed, specialist, single site estate vineyard with provenance. Riesling is our single focus.

Location of Vineyard

Elevated above the Barossa Valley on undulating land, Eden Valley is situated between 450 and 500 metres above sea level. At this altitude, the cooler temperatures and greater diurnal range allow the grapes to retain their natural acidity, with aromatics and fine flavours slowly developing well into the cool, dry autumn. The soils through Eden Valley are generally shallow, rocky and acidic, in many areas suited only to the grazing of sheep and cattle. There are special pockets with slightly deeper soils and finer rocks, where the vineyards have been planted.

Winemaking Philosophy

Pewsey Vale is one of the great Riesling vineyards of the world. Where a true alliance between nature and variety exists, the need for human intervention is minimal. Gentle guiding hands and an understanding of place are all that is needed to create consistent and delicious wines… vintage after vintage.

“This 2023 Single Vineyard Estate Riesling from Eden Valley is tight, mineral, spicy, super fine and lit up by a mainframe of acidity. It’s exciting to drink; the texture is chalky and fine, and the flavors linger and curl through the finish like wisps of smoke. What a joy. Seriously. Great wine!” — acclaim for 2023 Pewsey Vale Dry Riesling from Wine Advocate, Mar 2024
“This 2022 Single Vineyard Estate Riesling is rocky, dry, floral, fleshy, tight, talc-y, curved and flowing. It has austerity and meat in equal measure, and it lingers long after the wine has gone. What a great wine. It's pleasurable and age-worthy, with brilliant structural integrity and impressive freshness. It's complex as well. Great!” — acclaim for 2022 Pewsey Vale Dry Riesling from Wine Advocate, Mar 2024
“Intensely aromatic, this museum release Riesling, from old vines on a cool site, deftly demonstrates how excellently this variety ages. Honey-roasted almonds, kerosene, lime oil and can- died ginger progress to a dry, concentrated palate. Long, harmonious and fresh, it tingles with still- racy acidity and heaps of lemon-lime and floral flavors. Drinking beautifully now but shows no sign of tiring.” – (Hidden Gem) — acclaim for 2016 Pewsey Vale 10 Year Museum Reserve The Contours Riesling from Wine Enthusiast, Mar 2024
