Pecchenino

Brand Description

The Pecchenino winery has always been at its core, a family business. Currently the winery is run by Orlando and Attilio Pecchenino, the grandchildren of Attilio Pecchenino.

The first documentation of winemaking activity during the end of the 20th century, when the winery, managed by their grandfather Attilio, had little more than 8 hectares. In the 1970s, the reins of the winery passed into the hands of his son Marino and later, at the end of the 1980s in line with the generational changeover, his sons Orlando and Attilio took over the business. In 2017, Orlando's eldest daughter Lisa joined the company, historically heralding in the fourth generation of Pecchenino and more notably, the first female to be involved with the winery. And more recently, Lisa's sisters Gaia and Sofia, after completing their studies in languages and oenology, have also become an active part of the company.

Location of Vineyard

The Pecchenino property currently consists of 35 hectares of vineyards, divided between the municipalities of Dogliani, Monforte d'Alba and Bossolasco, and two cellars, a historic cellar in Dogliani and a more recently built cellar in Monforte d'Alba.

Dogliani is part of the Dogliani DOCG production area, located in southern Piedmont, the southern part of the Langhe, which is particularly suited to the production of the Dolcetto vine. This is why the 26 hectares surrounding this property are mainly planted with Dolcetto, followed by Nebbiolo and Barbera.

Monforte d'Alba is one of the 11 communes that characterize the Barolo area, with respect to which it is located to the southeast. The family's investments in this commune began in 2004 with the acquisition of vineyards in the Le Coste di Monforte, which were joined in 2006 by land in the Bussia 'Corsini', while the winery is the result of a 2013 acquisition of an old farmhouse and further land in the Ravera di Monforte.

For the Pecchenino family, Alta Langa represents their most recent investment. In the municipality of Bossolasco, in the locality of Pezzea, there are 8 hectares of property and a farmstead, purchased in 2010. Here, given the altitude (700 m a.s.l.) and the calcareous soil, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling find their maximum expression.

Winemaking Philosophy

“The winegrower is first and foremost the guardian of a territory. This is why we safeguard and enhance it with our work. Through our wines we tell our family history, our traditions and the beauty of these places.”
-  The Pecchenino Family

The vineyard is worked with the highest respect for nature, biodiversity and environment, by adopting a sustainable management in order to focus on the quality of grapes. Vineyards are usually kept grassed over to make the soil softer and prevent erosion. Every year organic fertilisation is carried out by burial and light tilling to encourage the accumulation of water necessary for vegetative development. In the fight against vine diseases, treatments are planned taking into account rainfall data, using copper sulphate against downy mildew and mineral sulphur against powdery mildew. All other work in the vineyard is carried out manually to exercise greater quality control.

In the winery, every production step is aimed at achieving the highest quality, respecting the most intrinsic qualities of the raw material, supporting the natural transformations of the wine, in order to produce wines that express our terroir to the utmost. For this reason, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo and Barbera represent the history and tradition of the Langa, but it is also thanks to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Riesling, cultivated in specific high-altitude conditions, that the Pecchenino family can demonstrate that their land is one of the most generous and expressive on the international wine scene.

Acclaim
“Bursting with crushed strawberries, this wine is laced with cinnamon, vanilla, and a hint of nutmeg, alongside a herbaceous blend of thyme and oregano. Tobacco notes and an earthy mix of shiitake and porcini mushrooms add depth. Elegantly plush and approachable, it balances fresh and compote-like cherry and raspberry with fine tannins and a gentle herbal finish.” — acclaim for 2020 Pecchenino Barolo Bussia from Wine Enthusiast, Jun 2024
