J Portugal Ramos Quinta da Viçosa

Wine Description

Quinta da Viçosa is one of João Portugal Ramos' biggest vineyards, with a total of 100 acres located near Estremoz. In this vineyard different grape varieties have been planted every year, with the winery choosing to plant one Portuguese variety and one foreign variety to produce this wine, which is always new and appealing to the consumer. In this wine, the vintner has chosen to blend the international Syrah with the indigenous Trincadeira. Part of the harvest is foot trodden in marble troughs, known as lagares, and the remainder is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 12 months in new French and oak half barrels.

“The 2015 T - M (Quinta da Viçosa), the single-quinta blend that varies every year, is an equal blend of Touriga Nacional and Merlot aged for 12 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. The last ‘T-M’ version of this brand was the 2003. Things have changed a bit. From this vintage on, this is a "bio" vineyard—meaning it is organic but not yet listed as such. When last seen, this was in great form and looked superb. I especially love the way it has become more expressive, with a juicy finish and a bright feel. It is equally powerful and much more fun to drink now given its development. Keep cellaring it for another couple of years, although you can approach it now. It will continue to evolve well for more than another decade and hold well for a while after that.”

It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. The last "T-M" version of this brand was the 2003. Things have changed a bit. From this vintage on, this is a "bio" vineyard—meaning it could be organic, but it's not listed as such. This is a terrific one this year, with mid-palate finesse that makes it seem ethereal, fine flavor and a velvety texture. It is supported by moderate and controlled tannins, but there is a real backbone here. It is fresh and lifted all the while, finishing with bursts of flavor but always dry and serious, never a fruit bomb. It could use a year or two to calm down, but it can be approached young, if you must. It should age well.”
