Henschke Johann's Garden

Henschke Johann's Grenache bottle image

Wine Description

Named as a tribute to the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers, many of whom carried the first name of Johann. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant that the many generations that followed rejoiced in the riches of their prudent efforts. Barossa growers traditionally referred to their vineyard as their garden, from the German Weingarten. This blend is just one of those blessings.

Acclaim
“This GSM (which contains 76% Grenache) is painted with the distinctive brushstrokes of the historic winery. Finessed, precise, even filigree, it’s initially shy. Gentle aromas of cherry, plum, florals and baking spice and a slight savory note float from the glass. The palate is full but with elegance, and an interesting way of unfolding on the tongue. First, the silky, tangy fruit. The tannins creep in toward the end, with lovely texture and grip. The finish is on the short side. Not Henschke’s most memorable wine but a solid and ageworthy bottling nonetheless.”

“A blend from parcels of old, dry-farmed grenache on limestone, this includes mataro and a little syrah. If you love classic Barossa grenache, get some of this 2017, from a mild season with good reserves of water and a cool, late harvest that ended in the first week of May. You can sense that coolness in the quiet purity of fruit, the silken tannins and ample red-berry translucence of the wine. Stay with it, and the wine’s simple first impression takes on a red-fruited grandeur. Still an incipient bud, this will bloom over the next ten years in bottle.”

About the Vineyard

The traditions and culture have survived to this day, including the winemaking techniques used in this grenache blend. It is produced from low-yielding, old, gnarled, dry-grown bush and trellised vines on limestone soils from selected vineyards. The 2015 vintage has provided stunning signature regional varieties that show extraordinary flavour, purity of fruit and acid balance with the potential for excellent ageing.
