Wine Description

The name is derived from the battle (“bataille”) that took place where the château and vineyard are today during the Hundred Years’ War, around 1453. In this battle, the French re-conquered the neighboring Château Latour from the English, a crucial point for ending the 300 year long reign of the English in Aquitaine. The vineyards spread out over 57 hectares with the average vine age being 40 years old. The soil is silica and gravel, but the heart of the vineyard is on a deep gravel bed over a subsoil of clay and sandstone. There are also some parcels located in between Château Latour and Pichon Lalande.

“Tasted at The Sampler’s Batailley vertical tasting, the 1960 Batailley has a light cedar and cigar box bouquet that is still fresh but not exactly vigorous. There is something redolent of an old Burgundy here, musty and decayed, a little gray rot imparting some vegetal aromas, though not overpowering. The palate is light and innocuous, with touches of wild strawberry on the entry, the acidity not too sharp—simple but harmonious. I suspect this was heavily chaptalized at the time, but at 50 years of age, it is admittedly better than I expected, even if it is drying out on the sharp finish. Tasted January 2011.”
