Nicolás Catena Zapata

Nicolás Catena Zapata

Wine Description

The Catena family’s vision has been to uncover those magical places in each of the family’s vineyards that offer the purest expression of the land. Farming these special lots manually, hand-tending each of the vines, has led to the identification of individual plants which consistently produce the most exceptional fruit. These Zapata vines have been physically marked with a red sash, ensuring the most demanding attention to detail in their care. Harvested separately in multiple passes through the vineyard, the grapes are then loaded by hand into French oak barrels for a long, cool fermentation with cap management being done by hand. Over 200 separate micro-fermentations are done, separated by different lots and harvest times. The inaugural 1997 vintage of this Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec blend set a new standard of quality for wines from South America when it won a series of blind tasting against First Growth Bordeaux and other prestigious cuvées from around the world.

Acclaim
“The 2016 Nicolás Catena Zapata is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley. It was aged with painstaking precision and presents an alcohol content that reflects the cool year. Perhaps its best quality is the delicate nose of red fruit and floral aromas, which features blackcurrant, plum and lavender notes. Relaxed on the palate with thoroughly polished tannins and measured juice, the texture grows even silkier when the well-integrated freshness comes into play. A dusting of chalk makes a late entrance to coincide with the return of the fruity flavors. This is a layered, increasingly profound and nuanced wine.”
— Vinous, Nov 2021
“This is a blend of 61 percent cabernet sauvignon with 31 percent malbec, the remainder cabernet franc. It grows in three vineyards in Agrelo, Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira ranging from 3,000 feet of elevation to 4,790. In the cool 2016 vintage, with yields down 40 to 50 percent of normal, this wine has a calm gravity, layering cassis, mint and tobacco aromas that gently pull you in. Faint dark-chocolate tannins frame the lightly spiced pale cherry fruit. It would be well-suited to any beef dish, but the wine is complex enough to be a meal on its own. Find someone who wants to sit with you and savor it for hours, appreciating each new contour and expression of the Andes.”– (Best Bordeaux-Variety Blend)
