Castellare Il Poggiale Chianti Classico Riserva

Wine Description

Made from 90% Sangioveto, 5% Canaiolo, and 5% Ciliegiolo grown in the Il Poggiale vineyard, the grapes come from an elevation of almost 1,500 feet above sea level.  The combination of high elevation and low yields results in a wine that manages to simultaneously show both restraint and layered richness.  This classic red holds great aging capability.

Acclaim
“This wine offers dark but streamlined intensity with a big punch of Tuscan authenticity, thanks to this traditional blend of Sangioveto (Sangiovese) with tiny parts of Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo. This threesome combination of indigenous grapes shows bright acidity and a mid-weight style that is enhanced in good measure by the heat and dryness of this vintage. There are aromas of Morello cherry, dried rose or lavender flower and potting soil with hints of iron ore or crushed granite. The mouthfeel in the Castellare di Castellina 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale shows balanced freshness with hints of the tannic astringency that comes with this vintage.”
— Wine Advocate, Mar 2021
“Forest berries, blue flowers and crushed mint are behind the pretty nose. Bright and savory, the linear palate offers crushed cherry, orange peel and star anise alongside taut, fine-grained tannins.”
