Castellare Il Poggiale Chianti Classico Riserva

Il Poggiale Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG bottle image

Wine Description

Made from 90% Sangioveto, 5% Canaiolo, and 5% Ciliegiolo grown in the Il Poggiale vineyard, at an elevation of almost 1500 feet above sea level. The combination of higher elevation and extremely low yields results in a wine that manages to show both austerity and layered richness at the same time. This classic red holds great aging capability.

Acclaim
Highly aromatic nose offers ripe red cherry complicated by marjoram, dried flowers and bay leaf. Crisp and floral in the mouth, with energetic red berry, coffee and mint flavors further lifted by a refreshing minerality. The bright, very long finish leaves behind spice and floral notes.
— International Wine Cellar, Jul 2010
The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale is made in a more extroverted style, with a touch more new oak. It is a serious, beautifully sculpted wine bursting with dark plums, black cherries, mint, sage and rosemary. Despite its richness, the Poggiale retains plenty of minerality, with the essence of crushed rocks dominating the powerful finish. This is another fabulous effort from Castellare.
