Gran Enemigo

El Gran Enemigo bottle image

Wine Description

In the spectrum of people who pay attention to detail, winemakers are often incredibly detail-oriented.  This can sometimes spill over to become an internal battled, and, as Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena state, "We are our own worst enemy." El Enemigo pays homage to this internal struggle.

Acclaim
“Using the classic El Enemigo blend of Cabernet Franc with 15% Malbec, this is one of a line up of stunning wines from the bodega in 2015. Firmer and denser than the other Gran Enemigo reds, with top notes of Mediterranean spices and lots of chalky minerality, it needs more time in bottle, but will reward patience.”
— Tim Atkin, MW, May 2019
BEST RED BLENDS OF THE YEAR: “When the El Enemigo project was launched in 2008, this blend was the only Gran Enemigo, and although there’s now an entire line, this one is still Bodega Aleanna’s flagship wine. It’s a red made with 30% malbec, 30% merlot, 20% cabernet sauvignon, and another 20% cabernet France, all grown in the Adrianna Vineyard, 1,500 meters above sea level in Gualtallary. While the cabernet sauvignon and the cabernet franc are from warmer sandy soils, the malbec and the merlot grow on cooler chalky ones. All four are picked at the same time to capture the complexity of grapes with different degrees of ripeness grown on very different soils. The result is a wine with a tense, crisp texture enveloped in fruity aromas and flavors of red fruits and violets. Herbs and spices appear on the backdrop along with lively, spirited acidity. A very young wine that needs about 5 years in the cellar.”
