Amarone della Valpolicella DOC 2001

To make this blend of 75% Corvina Veronese 20% Rondinella and 5% Molinara the grapes are harvested and then left to dry naturally in a well-ventilated room until January. This drying process called appassimento is an ancient technique and is unique to the Valpolicella region. Allegrini has improved this technique by introducing innovative equipment which controls temperature and humidity conditions inside the drying center in order to preserve the integrity of the grapes during the delicate phase of the 3 to 4 month drying period. The wine is then aged in new French barriques for 18 months followed by an additional 7 months in larger oak casks and 14 months in bottle. It is deep purple in color with a bouquet full of dried fruit.

Tasting Notes

Deep purple in color with a powerful bouquet of warm spicy raisined fruit. Rich and full bodied intense and elegant. Velvety smooth. Amarone is an extremely important wine in Italian viticulture as it is unique to the Valpolicella region. This wine is traditionally drunk with game roasted and grilled meats casseroles and well matured cheeses. Excellent with hearty dishes. Since the grapes are allowed to dry partially before fermenting Amarone has a distinctive flavor which can also accompany new or exotic sweet and sour dishes. It is therefore also perfectly suited for drinking with Asian and middle-eastern dishes. Serve at 16°C - (61°F) and open the bottle an hour before drinking.

Food Pairing

This wine makes an excellent pairing with roasted or grilled meats and game hearty casseroles and aged cheeses. This versatile wine is ready to drink now but will age beautifully for years to come.
