Grattamacco

Brand Description

Founded in 1977, and acquired by the Tipa Bertarelli Family in 2002, Grattamacco was one of first the two wineries in Bolgheri.  A region typically known for Cabernet and Merlot, Grattamacco sets itself apart from surrounding wineries with its winemaking practices using 15% Sangiovese to impart quality and elegance in its wines.  Grattamacco was not only the first winery in Bolgheri to use Sangiovese because of its high altitude despite its proximity to the coast, but also the first to plant Vermentino.  Grattamacco wines are known for both their power, elegance and complexity that evolves with time.

Location of Vineyard

The 67 acres of vineyards are located on a rise between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, with a panoramic view of the Tuscan coast. The Grattamacco vineyards are located at about 330 feet above sea level, in a wonderfully protected plot that spans over one of Bolgheri’s only two hills, and is surrounded by other internationally renowned Bolgheri properties.

This area benefits from a dry climate with considerable temperature fluctuations and is famous for its world class wines.

Winemaking and Viticulture Philosophy

Integrity, quality and teamwork are the values that are upheld by the Tipa Bertarelli Family.  They apply Italian passion and Swiss precision in crafting wines that represent top quality, history and identity of the region.  The winery practices sustainable and natural methods in full respect of Nature.  Their final pillar and belief is to protect and maintain the identity of Tuscany and its traditions.  While innovating in the vineyard and cellar, their wines always reflect the tradition of the region.

The 2023 Bolgheri Rosso highlights the importance of the Cabernet Franc in the blend. In the glass, it displays a purple/red color and is highly expressive with wonderful energy on the nose. Fermented in stainless steel tank, and then in used barrels (3 to 4 years old), the nose reveals lively aromas of currants, graphite, black raspberries, sweet herbs, and a floral perfume. The palate is full-bodied, with a refreshing compact, and angular structure, well-defined tannins, and even spine of acidity, and notes of dusty earth through the finish. An overachiever with exceptional purity, this is an early contender for top lists of the year. Bravo. — acclaim for 2023 Grattamacco Bolgheri Rosso from Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2025
The 2009 Grattamacco is a deep red/brick hue and was made from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and the rest Sangiovese. (It’s always the same blend.) It opens to notes of tobacco, fresh earth, pine, cherries, kirsch, and leather, and the palate is full-bodied and balanced, with velvety tannins, mouthwatering acidity, balsamic herbs lasting on the long, salty finish, which has a delicate warmth. It retains a good deal of purity and, based on this bottle, is ready to drink now. I love where this is right now, at its peak of evolution and showing great today. — acclaim for 2009 Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore from Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2025
The 2012 Grattamacco also pours a deep red/brick color. In the glass, savory aromas of crushed Mediterranean herbs come to the fore along with notes of black raspberries, leather, sappy herbs, turned earth, and crushed flowers. Full-bodied, it has a balanced linear drive that focuses on the palate, with its characteristic saltiness and refreshing nature, supple, ripe tannins, and delicate notes of sweet orange citrus through the long, tapering finish. This is a fabulous vintage in the range. — acclaim for 2012 Grattamacco Bolgheri Superiore from Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2025
