Castello di Bossi
Winery Origin
Castello di Bossi is located in Chianti Classico, within the historic commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga. While the estate itself dates back centuries, its modern identity and fine-wine reputation were shaped in the mid-20th century, when visionary viticulture and a focus on site expression elevated Bossi into the upper tier of Tuscan estates.
Region Overview
Castelnuovo Berardenga is the southernmost commune of Chianti Classico, sitting closest to Siena. The landscape is defined by open valleys and rolling hills, with a higher proportion of albarese limestone and tufo soils than much of the region.
Lower average elevations and a warmer, sunnier exposure result in wines that are riper, more structured, and longer-lived, often drawing comparisons to the power and depth associated with Montalcino, while still retaining Chianti Classico’s savory backbone.
Vineyard Facts
- Corbaia comes from one of the estate’s oldest vineyards, planted in the 1960s—among the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards in Chianti Classico
- Cabernet Sauvignon cuttings were sourced from top Bordeaux estates, an unheard-of move in Tuscany at the time
- The vineyard sits in Castelnuovo Berardenga, where warmth and exposure allow Cabernet to fully ripen alongside Sangiovese
- Soils are primarily tufo - porous and well-aerated, retaining water during hot summers while remaining loose enough to allow oxygen to pass through—supporting vine health and balance. Another particularity of the soil is that there are a lot of prehistoric fossils like sea shells. This specific soil is rich in minerality
- Blend: 70% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc
- Aged 24+ months in premium French oak
- Produced only in top vintages, with limited production (~20K bottles/year)
