Kosher Wine FAQ

The word kosher means “fit” or “proper” in Hebrew and refers to products that comply with Jewish dietary laws (kashrut). For a wine to be considered kosher,

1) it must be supervised by a certified rabbi or rabbinical agency from vineyard to bottling;

2) only Sabbath-observant Jews may handle the wine throughout production process;

3) all ingredients, cleaning agents, yeasts, and materials must comply with Halacha (Jewish law); and

4) no prohibited animal-derived products may be used (such as gelatin, casein, isinglass).

Yes! To be Kosher for Passover, wines must follow the same regulations as kosher wines production but also be free of chametz (fermented grains – Gluten-free!). If the wine is Kosher for Passover, it will be indicated on the label with either a “P” or with text stating “Kosher for Passover”.

The term mevushal means "cooked" in Hebrew and refers to the process of boiling or using flash pasteurization, which makes it permissible for non-Jewish people to handle and pour the wine (in restaurants, hotels and catering, for example) without compromising its kosher status. However, many wine enthusiasts argue this process negatively impacts the flavor and aromatics of premium wines.

Many wine connoisseurs believe non-Mevushal wines have a superior quality with more complex and nuanced flavors because they are not heat-treated. While this makes non-Mevushal wines less flexible in service, they are ideal for gifts and at-home family celebrations.
