The 2002 Poggio ai Merli, a Merlot, is unexpectedly positive - the vines are still young and the stressful trio of hot vintages from 1999 and 2001 gave rather hot and alcoholic wines. Contado Aglianico del Molise DOC
The 2001 Contado is Aglianico of superior level, and one of the rare examples of a wine of this level produced outside the classic areas of Campania and Basilicata. Powerful and spicy aromas of raspberry fruit, vanilla and incense are followed by the high density flavors of the variety, concentrated and intense but with a balancing suppleness of texture and a savory close which indicate over a dozen years of drinking pleasure ahead.
