“This riesling is turbocharged with fruit, including peach pit, apple curd, mango dessert and just a touch of petrol. Very layered and textured on the medium-to full-bodied palate, this carries stone and tropical fruit long and fresh, thanks to acidity that builds.”
“The nose here is alive with loquat, dried apricots, quartz, riverbed and white stones. The medium-to full-bodied palate is so waxy and lemony with a real sense of structure and depth. Tangy and bright, this ends long and slightly oily.”
“It’s a testament to this extraordinary bone-dry riesling that it’s aged five years before release from the winery. And extraordinary is the right word. Crystalline flavors so precise they take your breath away. Waves of lime, brioche, and exotic spices like cardamom, plus a wet rocky minerality. Australia is well known for dry rieslings of ravishing freshness—especially the Eden and Clare Valleys. Pewsey Vale’s ‘The Contours’ has off-the-charts freshness, as well as layers and layers of complexity. If you’ve never had great New World dry riesling, this is your moment and the wine is a superb deal given the quality.”
“A strong vintage that was picked later. It delivers a lot of concentrated lime and lemon citrus amid stony, gently talcy minerals and hints of stone fruits. Terrific acidity and flavors of ripe lime, apples and nectarines, holding the finish long and fresh.” (#59 of “100 Best Wines Under $30 (2018)”)
Pewsey Vale Vineyard - James Halliday
Pewsey Vale Contours Riesling
"Out of childhood and into adolescence with confidence built on the balance the wine has achieved. The aromas and flavours are all citrus-related, acidity nearly aligned with its allies."
"Louisa Rose’s description of soft acidity is apt, as it is buried in the palate, the fruit more lemon than lime, the wine already dangerously delicious. History is likely to make my points appear miserly."
"A strong vintage that was picked later. It delivers a lot of concentrated lime and lemon citrus amid stony, gently talcy minerals and hints of stone fruits. Terrific acidity and flavors of ripe lime, apples and nectarines, holding the finish long and fresh. A great Pewsey Vale!"
"Showing a few brassy highlights to its straw color, Pewsey Vale's 2007 The Contours Museum Reserve Riesling is mature, offering hints of toasted coconut, beeswax, lime marmalade and bergamot oil. It's medium-bodied, fully dry and long on the finish, extended by electric acids and a zesty-briny character that lingers into next week. I wouldn't cellar it too much longer, but it's nice that the winery held some back so we can taste what mature Eden Valley Riesling can be."
