Some may say, "Wine from Rhode Island?"

But we say, "Why not?"

Until recently, there were no wine growing areas in the state, but now the idea seems to be a great one! Just check out these lines from an article found in Vineyard & Winery Management, Sept/Oct. 1997 regarding the cultivation of grapes in Rhode Island ...

"The nearby ocean and river waters moderate the temperatures and make this an ideal location for the cultivation of cool-climate grapes ...This southwesterly air flow moving in off the cool ocean waters produces late morning dew, preventing the harmful growth of mildew and mold ...Though spring arrives in early March, the weather stays cool until early June. The soils, wet and heavy in spring, are slow to warm. The growing season runs from budbreak in mid-May to harvest in the last week of October ...

"... The cooling summer breezes produce a summer mean temperature of 70 degrees, and in winter the waters warm this region, holding the lowest temperature to just above zero. Often the autumn brings no frost, when there is some, it tends to occur between mid-October and mid-November ...

"(FYI: Frost can destroy growing shoots in the spring and it is dangerous when buds are present.)

"... The grapes mature slowly and retain a balance of sugar and acid.  With slow development, the grapes are more fully mature at lower sugar levels than in other region and have higher acids maximizing freshness and depth of flavor in the wines."
