Samalens
The specialists of the Appellation Armagnac

Founded in 1882 by grandfather Jean Samalens, the company is now owned by the families of Jean and Georges Samalens. It is situated at Laujuzan among vineyards and oak trees in the heart of Bas Armagnac area, where the best Armagnac is produced!

Armagnac producers of a long and carefully kept tradition, they only distil wines from the best soils of the delimited region. Samalens is considered the specialists of the Appellation Armagnac. Their wines are distilled within their own distillery of 8 stills (the oldest dates from the last century) according to the old traditional process of slow distillation, rather than by today's modern methods.

Continuing their tradition of producing top quality Armagnacs with a longer than legally imposed maturation process, they preserve their first class reputation.

Samalens VSOP

6 years old, 40% alcohol
Color is amber gold, shiny; a very fruity and very fine bouquet with a touch of vanilla, overall, however, of a pulpy red fruit. Round and pleasant to the nose. Taste is pulpy, ample round and balanced; the first touch of old Armagnac.

Samalens Napoleon

12 years old, 40% alcohol
Color is slightly ambered, and very luminous. Bouquet is very fruity; peach, apricot, quince. Pleasant, fine, elegant to the palate; the fruity taste and the tannin of the wood melt together in to an unctuous blend.

An old Bas Armagnac, round and balanced and of a great pleasantness.

Reserve Imperiale XO

15 years, 40% alcohol
Color is slightly ambered. Nose very fruity of pulpy fruit and fresh grapes. Delicate flavors of honey and plum. A very round and perfectly balanced Bas Armagnac.

Fine, smooth and elegant, an inviting Bas Armagnac perfectly representing its type EXTRA OLD (XO), the Bas Armagnac of special occasions.

Vieille Relique

20 years old, 42% alcohol
Color is very warm, slightly amber with ruby and golden reflections. Subtle perfumes: streams of liquorice mixing with those of peach blossom and tobacco. Flavors of candied fruit and tannin. Much body and roundness, but also pleasantly soft. Remarkably long persistence in the mouth and in the glass. Very good "rancio."

Perhaps the best succeeded of all Samalens blends in this age range: powerful and yet smooth, fruity and yet mature, it unites the irreconcilable.

Samalens Single Vintage 1952

Distilled in the classic 19th century Armagnac stills exclusively from wines of the Grand Bas-Armagnac. Aged in 400 liter Black Gascon oak casks, where it lies until bottling. The color is deep with amber reflections. The nose is powerful and strong, with black tobacco mingling with forest perfumes. After aeration, these aromas give way to a dominant prune. The palate shows strong flavors of roasted coffee, cocoa, and burning wood. The palate is overcome with flavors of very old, slowly matured Bas-Armagnac. Very persistent in the glass, evoking first pepper and spices, than prune.

Samalens Single Vintage 1900

Distilled in the classic 19th century Armagnac stills exclusively from wines of the Grand Bas-Armagnac. Aged in 400 liter Black Gascon oak casks until 1957, when it was moved to glass demijohns. The color is brown with reflections of vermilion sparkling and luminous. The nose is strong and round, but not aggressive, dominated by aromas of plum. A very delicate brandy, very smooth despite its strong flavor and perfectly balanced. A remarkable persistence in the bouquet. Despite its very respectable age, this Bas-Armagnac has conserved its perfect balance: a long aging in an old cask from the beginning of the century is certainly the key to its success. A brandy of great class, raised for the pleasure of real connoisseurs.

"The nose brings distinct wine aromas with oak, candied violets, and vanilla bringing up the rear. The body is medium and silky in texture, and the delicate dry palate presents a well-integrated mélange of almonds, prunes, leather and mangoes." - 97 pts - The Wine Enthusiast March 2000.
