Acclaim
“A noseful of mulberries, black cherries, medicinal herbs and potpourri, with toasty, chocolatey nuances, leads to a palate that’s lighter than the nose implies, but still comes with plenty of fruit density and dusty spiced tannins. Initially straightforward, it gains more complexity with time in the decanter. This focused Pinot was made for the long haul.” — Wine Enthusiast, Dec 2023
“Dark cherries, blueberries, sage, earth, five spice and some smoke on the nose. Slate and oyster shell, too. It’s medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and silky tannins. Elegant, mineral finish.”
— James Suckling, Nov 2022

Wine Production

The Taylor Pass Pinot Noir fruit is planted on a mixture of soils. Stony soil that contributes fresh floral and red cherry fruit aromas, whereas silty loam soil provides earthy dense tannins and dark berry fruit flavors. The various clones and differing soil types are harvested separately to provide winemakers with as many flavor and texture options to choose from for this single vineyard wine.

About the Vineyard

Taylors Pass Vineyard sits on the northern bank of the Awatere River, running east to west through the Awatere valley and out to the Clifford Bay in the Pacific Ocean. The vineyard is warm and sheltered from the cool southerly breezes that flow down through the valley from the mountains.
