Librandi Megonio

Magno Megonio Val di Neto Rosso IGT bottle image

Wine Description

Magno Megonio is the name of a Roman centurion who is believed to be the first to leave traces about viticulture in the Val di Neto area. He once owned part of the estate Librandi owns today. Magno Megonio is made from 100% Magliocco, one of the key varieties in the region of Calabria and it is believed to have ancient origins dating back to Roman and Greek times. In recent years, most vineyards of this grape have been pulled out in favor of better-known international varieties. The Librandis, who have been experimenting with Magliocco for years, are firm believers in its potential.

Acclaim
Magno Megonio offers beautiful mineral notes behind a curtain of pulsing berry fruit and cola. This wine, made from the promising Magliocco grape, really does have character and exhibits fine winemaking in Calabria, a harsh and often overlooked region of southern Italy. Those drying materials give the wine balance and persistency on the finish.
— Wine Enthusiast, Oct 2008
Deep inky red. Aromas of sour red cherry, smoked meat, sassafras, mocha, underbrush and earth, with an almost exaggerated note of charred oak emerging with aeration. Generous and spicy in the mouth, with distinctly firm flavors of crunchy dark berries, coffee and spicy oak. Finishes with a lingering and attractive saline quality.
