Savoie
This small region, nestled in the Alpine hills of eastern France close to the Swiss border, is so popular with tourists in all seasons, that most of the wine produced never makes it out of the area. The terrain is mountainous and while great for skiing can be too high for grape growing. Thus, the vineyards are scattered and tend to be grouped in the flatter more sheltered parts of the region. Even so, vineyards here can be higher than those of Alsace to the north and Beaujolais due west; sometimes as much as 500 feet higher in altitude.
The crus of the area are better known than the AOCs; these include: Abymes, Apremont, Arbin, Ayze, Chignin, Crépy, Cruet, Marignan, Marin and Ripaille.
Once home to the House of Savoy, it was combined under their rule with most of northern Italy. This may be why it retains such a unique and distinctive set of grape varieties from which the wines are made. The majority of the wines are crisp, clean, lightly scented whites, from grapes such as Jaquère, Chardonnay, Altesse and Roussanne, here known as Bergeron. However, reds from Gamay, Pinot Noir and the local Mondeuse should not be missed.
