Rhône

The vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône follow the Rhône River from Vienne to Avignon for nearly 200 kilometers. This region, common with the Loire Valley, offers the most diverse selection of wines possible; dry white wines, rich demi-sec whites, roses, light red wines, heavy red wines, and sparkling wines.

These vineyards are clearly divided into two regions, The Northern Rhône Region and the Southern Rhône Region. Wines are also produced in the middle, but much of this is quite recent.

Although the Rhône is generally thought of as a red-wine region (much like The Loire is associated primarily with white wine), an interesting white has emerged from the southern Rhône. The Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise has been gaining in its popularity. This is due to the fact that wine drinkers are moving away from the established name, but more so to the efforts of the individuality of the wines.

Styles: - The style of the wines will depend as much on the proportion of grapes as on the soils. Grenache, dominant except in the north, offers big color and body; Syrah, dominant in the north, brings dark, purple color with firm spicy flavors; Cinsault, tempers the rich fruit of the Grenache with slight tart elegance; and Mourvedre, a low-yielding varietal, gives the wine structure and age potential.
